This course is designed to provide learners with knowledge and skills in clinical orthopaedics in relation to infection, inflammation with a focus on history taking, clinical examination and appropriate orthopaedic investigations and management of osteomyelitis and septic arthritis and inflammatory arthritis. The course also focusses on professional topics including audit and use of the PIOA trauma database.

This course covers history taking, examination, investigation, arriving at a differential diagnosis and then planning management (both non-operative and operative) for orthopaedic infection.  It includes the diagnosis and management of orthopaedic infections including osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, periprosthetic infection. The second focus is on inflammatory orthopaedic conditions with the diagnosis and management of inflammatory arthritis with a focus on gout, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. The final focus is on the use of the PIOA Trauma database and to train learners in development of their professional career – including audit, advocacy and professional behaviour.
